Annual Council Meeting and Development Morning – 16 September

This years Swim England South East Annual Council Meeting will be held on Saturday 16th September at Holiday Inn Guildford.

To complement the Annual Council Meeting this year we will be running a development morning for club personnel. This will include a choice of workshops:

  • Club Structures – Incorporation and Charity Status
  • The use of Social Media within Clubs
  • Swimming Officials Forum – FINA rules update, Training, Mentoring and Information flow

Harold Fern & AH Turner Awards

The Regional Management Board welcomes nominations for the Harold Fern and A H Turner Awards. Any nomination should be accompanied by a supporting letter and CV for the nominee. The criteria is as follows:

The Award is given to the individual or organisation making the most outstanding contribution to aquatics at club, county, regional, national or international level.

In selecting the winner of the Award each year, the Sport Governing Board will give consideration to the following:

  • outstanding achievement in advancing the sport through competition/coaching/officiating
  • outstanding achievement in the administration of the sport
  • outstanding achievement in advising the sport

Southampton Divers get GB and England selection

Six divers from Southampton Diving Academy have recently been selected to join GB and England teams during the summer.

Emily Martin, 16, and Cameron Gammage, 15, have both been selected to for GB at the Junior European Championships in Bergen, Norway, at the end of June. This follows their following their excellent performances at GB Junior event in Dresden, Germany.

Gemma McArthur, 19, has been selected to represent GB in the Grand prix diving event in Bolzano at the beginning of July. This follows her amazing result at the British Cup where she became Women’s 10m platform British champion.

Milo French, 11, Robbie Lee, 12 and Leon Baker, 12, have all been selected to represent England in the Mediterranean Cup to be held in Bolzano, Italy at the beginning of August. This follows their outstanding diving at the Junior Elite National Championships in April.

Also joining the Southampton divers on the Junior European team is Alfie Brown , who began his diving career at Star, Guildford.

Jack Clewlow will be travelling as coach to both the events in Bolzano, and Lindsey Fraser will be travelling to Budapest in Hungary in July to judge at the World Championships.

Gary Hunt takes gold in Abu Dhabi

British world champion Gary Hunt won gold at the third High Diving World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

The 31-year-old finished with a score of 639.30, 60 points more than Mexico’s Jonathan Paredes, with fellow Briton Blake Aldridge fifth.

Hunt, from Southampton, was second at the inaugural World Cup in 2014 but failed to make the podium last year.

However, he beat Paredes to claim victory at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia, in August.

Helen Mack receives President’s Plate

 

Helen Mack, the Regions lead on swim21 and Young Volunteer Programme was awarded the President’s Plate by Regional President Roger Prior at the Region’s Annual Council Meeting in September.

Well known to all clubs in the Region as a ‘go to’ person, Helen’s work also includes organising training courses and keeping us all up to date with our sport in the Region through the monthly Club Update.

She is also involved in looking for funding opportunities to support clubs and volunteers. In addition Helen works with the SER Development Group and has recently started working with discipline groups.

On being presented with the award Helen said: ‘It was a total shock, I had no idea. I thoroughly enjoy my role with the SER and working alongside some amazing and committed volunteers. It is great to work within the sport which gave me so much enjoyment and fulfilment as a swimmer during my time at City of Sheffield SC and I still love to teach as a volunteer for my local club and schools’.
