Become a Qualified Licensed Open Water Official

Would you like to stand on the side of a beautiful lake on a lovely sunny day instead of a hot pool? Fancy doing something a little different? Why not train to become a qualified licensed open water official!

Whilst the sunny weather can’t be guaranteed, Swim England would like to acknowledge the skills and understanding pool swimming officials have which would be used in open water swimming.

Swim England would like swimming officials to consider applying for a place on their bespoke course which will take place in Loughborough on 17 May 2020.

This Open Water Officials’ Bridging Course will comprise of:

  • One day, face-to-face delivery, which will be a mix of seminars and skills practice through the use of videos
  • One day attending your Regional Open Water Championships, where officials roles will be signed off by a mentor.

Opportunities

Once you have qualified as Level 1 official and applied for an open water licence, you can volunteer to officiate at the National Open Water Championships.

New British Swimming Judge Level 1 Training

Monday 27th January 2020 saw the launch of the new online theory modules for the training of the pool Judge 1 technical officials. This brings to a close a considerable amount of work in partnership with Swim England and the Institute of Swimming to ensure we are delivering a quality product to our volunteers.

Whilst the content of the training remains largely unchanged, the move to an online format will allow volunteers to start the training at their own pace and to fit with all the other lifestyle commitments which we know our volunteers have.

Following a period of development and testing the course will form part of the British Swimming portfolio of officials’ training and will be delivered in the same format by all of the Home Countries, ensuring consistency of experience for all candidates.

Face to face delivery of the theory training will be replaced by access to local support on request, with a dedicated new email address being set up to provide ongoing additional support as we seek to grow our number of qualified officials.

Once their theory training is complete and registered, candidates will be provided with local Tutor/Mentor to guide them through their practical assessments.

Training resources have been updated and clear guidance is now included on suggested timescales for undertaking each competence, with a time limit for completion of Theory & Practical of 11 months has been introduced.

Upon completion of all Judge 1 training individuals will automatically be issued with their first licence, which will be valid for 4 years, which then enable them to apply to volunteer at all events up to and including National level.

Swim England South East to stop providing Bursaries for Teaching courses

Having provided clubs with bursaries over many years to support teachers and coaches, the Region has been decided to close applications for bursaries for teachers (ASA level 1 – Swimming Assistant Teaching and ASA level 2 – Swimming Teacher). The Region will continue providing bursaries for coach education courses in all disciplines.

This change will come into effect on 1st May 2018. Applications for bursaries for Level 1 and Level 2 Teaching qualifications will not be processed if received after this date.

Why is this happening?
The Region has supported clubs with teaching bursaries for many years and are proud that a lot of teachers working in clubs have been able to benefit from this support. However we recognise that a lot of the teachers we have invested in have left the club scene and are now working for pool operators and other organisation in private learn-to-swim schemes.

The Region have also recognised that a growing number of clubs are setting up learn-to-swim schemes as separate businesses and that the swimmers they are teaching are not members of Swim England and therefore the Region is no longer receiving membership fees for these swimmers.

Because of this the Region has decided to focus its investment into coaching and believe that the reorganisation of courses by the Institute of Swimming is the right time to direct its investment where it will have the most benefit for clubs and athletes.

More information on the bursary scheme can be found here.

Swimming Coach and Team Manager Conference – 11th June

The inaugural Regional Conference will be held at Leatherhead Leisure Centre on Sunday 11th June. This conference is a pathway initiative, held in partnership with Swim England South East and the England Programmes team. It is intended that the regional conference, primarily aimed at level 2 coaches and module 1 and 2 trained team managers will continue to be scheduled to take place each year in June as an integral part of the ‘Regional Development Programme’.

This is an excellent opportunity for coaches and team managers to access technical and non- technical information specifically relating to age – group swimming. Attendance at the conference will allow coaches and team managers to develop a greater awareness of the critical role that they need to play in the development of our aspiring young swimmers. Delegates will be have the opportunity to check and challenge their understanding with key speakers and their peers throughout the day.

Please see here for a booking form and full agenda;
