New Year Honours recognise Freda Streeter

Freda Streeter from Nutfield, Surrey, has received an MBE for services to Open Water Swimming.

The swimmer and coach, who was inducted as an Honour Coach into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 2005, has dedicated her life to outdoor swimming. She has trained many aspiring English Channel swimmers including her daughter, Alison Streeter MBE, who swam has swum the English Channel a record breaking 43 times.

In 2008 Freda was made a Honorary Vice President of Surrey ASA.

Chloe Pollard takes U23 World Aquathlon title

On the back of her recent National Silver Open water performance and her European Gold at the Aquathlon Championships in Bratislava in May, East Grinstead swimmer Chloe Pollard travelled to Penticton, Canada for the International Triathlon Union World Championships as part of the Great Britain Team.

In an early morning race start, Chloe dominated the 1km swim, in a time of 00:13:48, emerging on the beach 1 minute ahead of the field showing her swimming pedigree before hitting the road for the 5km run (00:20:58). In a race that played out to the line, Chloe took the Under 23 World Aquathlon title in a time of 00:35:34 ahead of Canada and Australia.

Annual Council Meeting and Development Morning – 16 September

This years Swim England South East Annual Council Meeting will be held on Saturday 16th September at Holiday Inn Guildford.

To complement the Annual Council Meeting this year we will be running a development morning for club personnel. This will include a choice of workshops:

  • Club Structures – Incorporation and Charity Status
  • The use of Social Media within Clubs
  • Swimming Officials Forum – FINA rules update, Training, Mentoring and Information flow

Regional Open Water Camp 2017

On Sunday 18th June, 31 selected athletes took part in the regional open water camp for 12 – 16 year olds. The day started with an open water pool skills session at ACS School in Cobham, we then moved on to the Ferris Meadow Lake in Shepperton for a race day workshop followed by a lake training session and finishing with a race. The weather was glorious, athletes and coaches came away from the day with lots of information shared by Head Coach Marc Foster and Regional Open Water Manager Keith Barber. Thank-you to our Team Managers Terry Norris and Liz Rowley and the following coaches for supporting the day;

Harold Fern & AH Turner Awards

The Regional Management Board welcomes nominations for the Harold Fern and A H Turner Awards. Any nomination should be accompanied by a supporting letter and CV for the nominee. The criteria is as follows:

The Award is given to the individual or organisation making the most outstanding contribution to aquatics at club, county, regional, national or international level.

In selecting the winner of the Award each year, the Sport Governing Board will give consideration to the following:

  • outstanding achievement in advancing the sport through competition/coaching/officiating
  • outstanding achievement in the administration of the sport
  • outstanding achievement in advising the sport

Chloe clinches Open Water title

A calm sea and warm sunshine greeted the competitors to the historic Southsea 2 km pier to pier race on Sunday in the final event of the ASA South East Region Open Water Championship series.

Chloe Pollard from Eastbourne Swimming Club needed to cross the line in 5th place to retain her title as the Woman’s Champion. Chloe did not disappoint and in an exceptionally fast race crossed the line first with a time of 23 min. 29 sec. to retain the Championship.

 

Swim Serpentine – 24/25th September 2016

London Marathon in partnership with British Swimming and the ASA are putting on a mass participation open water swim and the British Open water championships. It will be held in the Serpentine on 24th (participation) and 25th (Championships) September 2016. It is expected there will be 4,000 participants on the Saturday and the Sunday will have all age groups, Masters and an Elite event.
