Swimming Coach Development Opportunities

Swim England Coaching & Teaching Guidance

It is vital for the future of our sport that participants are confident in the quality of activities offered by Swim England affiliated organisations. It is also very important that clubs, administrators, coaches and teachers have the peace of mind that they are covered by appropriate insurance.

Swim England have put together Coaching and Teaching statement and guidance which covers Swim England’s expectations of clubs in relation to the level of coaching and teaching in all disciplines in the club environment. This is also the standard that is required by Swim England’s insurers in relation to a club’s liability insurance.

Swim England South East to stop providing Bursaries for Teaching courses

Having provided clubs with bursaries over many years to support teachers and coaches, the Region has been decided to close applications for bursaries for teachers (ASA level 1 – Swimming Assistant Teaching and ASA level 2 – Swimming Teacher). The Region will continue providing bursaries for coach education courses in all disciplines.

This change will come into effect on 1st May 2018. Applications for bursaries for Level 1 and Level 2 Teaching qualifications will not be processed if received after this date.

Why is this happening?
The Region has supported clubs with teaching bursaries for many years and are proud that a lot of teachers working in clubs have been able to benefit from this support. However we recognise that a lot of the teachers we have invested in have left the club scene and are now working for pool operators and other organisation in private learn-to-swim schemes.

The Region have also recognised that a growing number of clubs are setting up learn-to-swim schemes as separate businesses and that the swimmers they are teaching are not members of Swim England and therefore the Region is no longer receiving membership fees for these swimmers.

Because of this the Region has decided to focus its investment into coaching and believe that the reorganisation of courses by the Institute of Swimming is the right time to direct its investment where it will have the most benefit for clubs and athletes.

More information on the bursary scheme can be found here.
