Alfred H Turner award winner Rosa Gallop shares accolade with her family

Rosa Gallop has paid tribute to her family after being named the winner of the Alfred H Turner award.

After an incredible career in swimming, Rosa said that she couldn’t have done any of it without their support.

She said: “I’m really chuffed (to win the award) but I would like to say without my husband and my family, I couldn’t have done it. So, I think we all deserve the award, it’s an award for all of us.”

Rosa is certainly a worthy recipient of the award but after collecting the accolade at Swim England’s National Awards ceremony in Birmingham she was taken aback by the moment.

“I’m a bit overwhelmed actually. I’m so chuffed, I didn’t expect anything like that.”

How you can help support Swim England’s #SaveOurPools campaign

Swim England is encouraging its members, clubs, swim schools – and everyone who uses a pool, to get behind our campaign and support our efforts to ensure the Government provides additional support for swimming pools and leisure centres.

These facilities are crucial parts of local communities.

Not only are they the homes of our swimming, para-swimming, diving, water polo and artistic swimming clubs, they help support the health and happiness of the country, saving the NHS hundreds of millions of pounds and they are where millions of people learn how to swim and be safe in the water.

But they are under threat as a result of soaring energy prices.

We are already seeing reduced opening hours and pools closing across the country and without additional support from the government the situation will only get worse.

Get involved and sign the petition.

Rushmoor’s Ranjuo Tomblin shortlisted for National Spirit of Aquatics Award

Ranjuo made history in 2022, by becoming the first-ever male to compete for Great Britain in a solo artistic swimming event.

The young star went on to win silver at the European Junior Championships with an incredible routine that scored 76.8668 to finish just ahead of Italy.

He also won bronze in the Mixed Technical Duet and narrowly missed out on a medal in the Mixed Free Duet.

His commitment to his club, Rushmoor, never dwindled as he began 2022 with two gold medals at the Artistic Swimming Junior and Senior National Championships – all in a year where he completed his GCSE’s.

National Winter Championships 2022 qualification period extended

Following a review, Swim England’s Swimming Leadership Group have voted to change the qualification period for the 2022 Swim England National Winter Championships.

The decision has been taken after feedback from coaches and swimmers noted that the opportunities to reach the qualification times have been severely restricted by the Covid-19 lockdown period.

There was little swimming in England between March 2020 until the start of the following season in September 2021 meaning there have been a limited number of meets for competitors to set a representative time in.

Having considered the situation, the decision has been made to change the initial qualifying date to 1 November 2019.

The times to enter will still have to be achieved at a Level 2 meet between this date and the closing date of 22 November 2022.

Kent win first County Team Championships after last-race victory secures title

Kent won their first National County Team Championships title after a nail-biting race for the top spot which went down to the wire.

Victory in the final event of the competition ensured they finished top of Division One by the narrow margin of four points from second-placed Yorkshire.

Kent had held a slender lead throughout the competition but were pegged back by Yorkshire and the two counties were locked on 442 points with only two events remaining.

However, Kent sealed victory in the Mixed Open 300m Freestyle Relay – their fourth win of the afternoon – to take the top spot and spark wild celebrations.

They also finished second four times and third once to significantly better their previous best finish at the National County Team Championships of third in 2016 and 2019.

British Masters Championships returning to Ponds Forge in 2023

The annual British Masters Championships will return to Sheffield for the first time in seven years in 2023.

More than 800 masters swimmers from across the home nations are expected to compete at Ponds Forge International Pool from 2-4 June.

The event, which takes place in a long course 50m pool, rotates between the Home Nations, with Swim England hosting on a bi-annual basis.

Ponds Forge missed out on hosting the event in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Sheffield pool last hosted the competition in 2016, with Plymouth’s Life Centre taking centre stage for the last running of the event in England back in 2018.

The British Masters Championships also features the Cupar Trophy, awarded to the best-performing club at the competition.

Regional Off Shore Camp 2023

We are delighted to be once again planning a regional off shore camp for selected swimmers from our region. The team will travel to Luxembourg to compete in the Euro Meet from the 27th – 29th January 2023.

This exciting experience aims;

  1. To provide exposure and experience of overseas competition
  2. To provide a motivational opportunity for South East athletes

Due to the lack of opportunities over the last few years we will be taking a slightly larger team of athletes to be selected from the Regional Winter Short Course Championships. The full selection criteria can be found on the attachment Selection Criteria for the 2023 Swim England South East Region Off shore camp

To support this camp we are looking to recruit an experienced Assistant Team Manager. The successful applicant must hold a Swim England DBS, approved safeguarding training and Team Manager 1 and 2 modules. For further information please contact [email protected]
