Portsmouth Northsea swimmer Gemma Spofforth set a new British Record for the Women's 50m Backstroke as she continues her preparations towards this summer’s Beijing Olympic Games.

Spofforth, who is based at the University of Florida in the US, swam 28.67 at the Charlotte Ultra Swim meeting in Mecklenburg County to better the previous standard of 29.03 set by Sarah Price in 2003.

Twenty-year-old Spofforth already holds the Women's 100m Backstroke record of 59.88 which she set in April this year on her way to making the British Olympic squad.
